EYOE November Playlist

It’s the moment you’ve been waiting all month for. The Eat Your Own Ears November playlist. And I gotta say, I think this is the best mix that we’ve put together so far, managing to sneak in a couple of my all-time favourites in the shape of ‘Hendrix with KO’ by Caribou and ‘When I Come Back Around’ by Jamie Lidell. Check it out following the below link, and then come and see your highlights live.

This week

Looking ahead to the week and to Thursday in particular.

Egyptian Hip-Hop

These young guys have come quite a way in 2010, playing every good festival in the summer and releasing their debut E.P. recently, the band keep going from strength to strength and it’s a pleasure to have them playing at XOYO on their first ever headline UK tour. We expect bigger things from them with every passing month.

El Guincho

We’re enormous fans of El Guincho and his unstoppably fun music. We’re already brushing up on our Spanish so we can sing along. Check out this slightly NSFW video of Bombay, it has some extremely pretty, uh, cinematography. Enjoy.

Mystery Jets

A band who need no introduction. The brilliant Mystery Jets. We are beyond excited to have them back again in November. Check out this tour trailer for a little idea of what to expect.

The Knocks

The Knocks Live Debut at Bowery Ballroom CMJ 2010 from HeavyRoc Music on Vimeo.

We are pretty excited to have The Knocks not once, but twice in the month of November. The duo have worked with the likes of Ellie Goulding and Sunday Girl but it’s their own material that is getting us worked up. Take a look at the above video for their debut live performance at CMJ and get yourself down to their debut London show at XOYO.

Tribes

We are delighted to host hotly tipped TRIBES, twice this side of Christmas. They play the Lexington on the 2nd of Decemeber fresh from their support of the MYSTERY JETS on the 11th of Novemeber

I you don;t know them, their sound is lo-fi turned pop - simple, clean songwriting filtered through warm, fuzzy disjointedness. Described by the NME as  “the uncharted middle-ground that separates Pavement and The Courteeners…” Check out their great tour video below..

Gold Panda

Snow And Taxis from Gold Panda on Vimeo.

Amazing new video from Gold Panda for ‘Snow + Taxis’ one of our favourites from his incredible debut album. Can’t wait to see him in only little over two weeks now.

Wildbirds and Peacedrums

It’s a little while off but we are already getting excited about Wildbirds and Peacedrums on the 27th of November. The duo make some of the most interesting and beautiful music at the moment, skirting the boundaries of folk, electronic music and even the pop of Kate Bush.

If you have a spare 20 minutes today you could do a lot worse than watch this superb session for Rockfeedback HERE

November preview

Here is a little run down of stuff we are really looking forward to this month from Eat Your Own Ears…

Egyptian Hip-Hop // 4th November // XOYO

It’s been a great year for Egyptian Hip-Hop and they round it off, celebrating their new E.P. by playing some headline shows. We can’t wait to see them conquer East London’s XOYO with their beyond-their-years avant pop.

Gold Panda // 18th November // Corsica Studios

We love homemade YouTube videos, and this little gem documents some kids messing around on an abandoned bus, soundtracked by our favourite Gold Panda song.

Sleigh Bells // 21st November // XOYO

Check this huge video for huge Sleigh Bells song ‘Infinity Guitars’ with Alison Krauss doing for baseball what Britney Spears did for cheerleading look way back when.

Summer Camp //23rd November // HMV Forum

It’s easy to forget the support band, but there’s often gold further down the bill when it comes to Eat Your Own Ears, and the Local Natives show at the end of November is no exception, with support from the excellent Summer Camp.

Steve Mason covering Madonna

Yes we did just type that. Here it is. A special acoustic performance from London’s Slaughtered Lamb pub, filmed beautifully and is really getting us in the mood to see the full band show tommorow night at XOYO.

Watch the whole acoustic show here: Domino Records

And we have only a few tickets left for tommorow.

Pierre Bastien vs Dosh

DOSH VS PIERRE BASTIEN

We are incredibly lucky to have two of the most interesting boundary-pushing artists going playing in London tonight courtesy of Eat Your Own Ears, so you could be excused for having a little trouble deciding which is worth your eyes and ears. Here’s our handy guide to help you…

ROUND ONE - INVENTIVENESS

You like invention - in this day and age of three chords and epic choruses, we all like a creative soul who is trying to be unique. So how do our competitors line-up?

Pierre: Invents and builds his own instruments, he made his very own orchestra from meccano and little else.

Dosh: Uses an arrangement of samplers and electronics to play multiple instruments at the same time.

WINNER: PIERRE

ROUND TWO - GROOVE

For some a gig is a perfect place to do some shaking and let go, for others the arms-folded nodded approval is all that is needed.

Pierre: More of an engaging watch, you will want to see exactly what kind of craziness is taking place on stage

Dosh: Dosh’s new song ‘From The House of Caesar’ is one song that commands you to move, and then there’s that light show.

WINNER: DOSH

Round THREE - THE MUSIC

Pierre:

Dosh:

RESULT: It’s a tie.

Well, you knew it would be. Whichever you go to tonight we’re sure will be one to remember.

It maybe a cold Monday in October but we have plenty going on tonight.  To kick off we have the haunting SOAP&SKIN, bringing her dramatic and beautiful songs to the Union Chapel with the accompaniment of a chamber music ensemble. Full details here.

If you are East this evening you can catch the first UK headline show and album launch party for L.A’s, KISSES at new London venue, XOYO. Support comes in the shape of FIXERS, with DJ sets from THISAINTNODISCO and MAGNETS. Full details here.

Lastly we have KATE NASH at the Shepherds bush Empire. Coming on the back of an already sold-out European tour. This is set to be a great show, with support from the amazing BRIGITTE APHRODITE. Full details here.

From The House Of Caesar Dosh

Here is a brand new tune from Dosh and this one comes on so strong it might well be one of the year’s best. The slow enveloped piano loop is right out of the DJ Shadow book of tricks before a huge arpeggio synth line bursts in, building layer upon layer, it truly moves. And take a look at that picture from Dosh playing on his current tour. Lazer guided indeed.

Dosh of course has worked with Andrew Bird, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and more but with this new material he is really coming in to his own. Really excited to see the show next week.

Soap & Skin

If you haven’t heard the sultry, beautiful work of Soap & Skin before then you must check out this slightly frightening video. Anja Plaschg is Soap & Skin and makes hauntingly stark songs, as you can see/hear from this goth tinged piano piece. It’s dark, heavy and fits right in with some of our favourite stuff from this year like Jonsi, How To Dress Well and Zola Jesus.

Pierre Bastien

Pierre Bastien - Water Music from The Wire Magazine on Vimeo.

I was going to write an introduction to the wonderful Pierre Bastien but The Quietus, as ever, have summed it up perfectly:

Composer, multi-instrumentalist and inventor Pierre Bastien has been constructing unique musical machinery for over 30 years.

Bastien’s initial public performances were as a member of French collective bands Operation Rhino, Nu Creative Methods and Effectifs de Profil, as well as the Dominique Bagouet Dance Company. He has collaborated regularly with his friend Pascal Comelade, participating in Comelade’s Bel Canto Orquesta, and artists from many other fields including video (Pierrick Sorin), fashion (Issey Miyake) and the circus (Cirque Trottola). Other musical collaborators have included Robert Wyatt, Jaki Liebezeit and Jac Berrocal.

Bastein’s Mecanium is a self-built orchestra of musical automata, constructed largely from Meccano and powered by turntable motors, playing acoustic instruments including percussion, wind and string. Since the 1980s, the Mecanium has toured the world, with Bastien accompanying it live on pocket trumpet or other instrumentation.
